Jack has spent the last couple of weeks in a strange balance between relaxing and becoming increasingly stressed. The Doctor is conspicuously absent, and it seems almost certain that if he wants to get back to his home universe - Cardiff or otherwise - he needs to go out to the same place he came in from.

That wasn't fun last time.

So instead of going over options in his head again, he's sitting in his new room drafting a hugely belated resignation letter to Lilly - she's another one he can't find.

Jack slips an arm around Ianto's waist, to make hand-holding easier.

He's helpful that way.

"Yeah," he says. "But if it gets caught in here, he should be. One demon against thousands?"

He's... not really as hopeful as his voice suggests. But he knows what the patrons can be capable of.

"He was strong, Jack." He pulls himself closer to Jack's warmth. "He was very strong. I don't know how you fight a demon at all. Aside from . . . your method."

Now, there Jack is on firmer ground.

"You might be surprised," he says softly, mouth close to Ianto's ear.

"Mm. Discussing demon-fighting in bed. Sexy," Ianto murmurs and pats Jack's cheek. "I'm sure, when it comes to the crunch, there are many people in Milliways who'll fight to the death. I'm hopeful things won't come to that."

"Well, it's a change from discussing alien-fighting," Jack says thoughtfully. "We're shaking things up."

Ianto chuckles against Jack's arm. "Feels the same, really.

"Doesn't answer the question, though: how does one fight a demon?"

Apart from really carefully?

"Not sure. Last time was a bit of a wing and a prayer, huh? Religious artefacts seem to feature pretty heavily, though."

Ianto holds Jack's hand a little tighter.

"Marvelous. I'll start begging and borrowing from churches the moment I'm home."

Jack smiles at the top of Ianto's head.

"Good plan," he says. "We've probably got bits and pieces in the Hub, but if faith's the key, probably better to go for things that have seen use."

"I'll check the archives. Not sure an alien relic would be any good against an Earthly demon, though."

"You never know."

Jack settles against him more comfortably.

"You're probably right, though. Some things defy logic."

"Because the supernatural always lends itself to logic," Ianto pauses to yawn, "and obeys the laws of physics."

"Any technology sufficiently awesome is indistinguishable from magic," misquotes Jack, slightly smugly.

Ianto chuckles in a very "yes, dear," sort of way. "I sincerely hope demon possession is not made possible by gadgets."

Jack pauses.

Eloquently.

"Oh, dear God," Ianto groans. "It is."

"Not on Earth," Jack qualifies hastily.

You know, that they know of.

"Well. It's broken. I made very sure."

"All right." He stems the rising tide of panic. ""So, then, on Earth it's probably just a supernatural phenomenon and must be battled by supernatural means."

"Right," Jack says, stroking the back of his neck lightly.

"It's never been a huge problem for us."

"Back to the begging for religious relics plan, then." He settles against Jack again, his breathing easier. "I'll ask around."

Jack smiles.

"You do that. Always best to be prepared."

"Yes, sir." He relaxes against Jack even more, on the verge of sleep. "Thank you for sitting up with me. It helps."

"It's not exactly a hardship, Ianto."

(Read: I am incapable of expressing sincere affection verbally. Joking/flirting will have to do.)

"Yes, well," Ianto mumbles. He is picking up on the local lingo, but the learning is slow. No lexicon.

Jack laughs softly.

"Come on. Sleep. You'll be sore enough in the morning without exhaustion, too."
