Jack Harkness' room :: Mid-2005 timewarp AU :: Milliways

Jack's room is mostly basic, it has to be said.

In fairness, he hasn't had much chance to make it his own - it has only been (ahem) somewhere private to go that is not the TARDIS for when he visits Milliways.

And since he is not Bound, for most of the time it stays empty, storing just some clean clothes and basic necessities (well - basic if you're Jack) and not much else.


There is this to be said for it, too:

The door may be locked, but it is not booby-trapped.

Lucky for some.

Still, at least the room is secure for the moment.

And they have water.

Puck subsides back to his seat against the overturned bed, looking at Havelock with a sigh of dry long-suffering.

Havelock does not consider alcohol to be an asset unless he can use it as an explosive.

And Puck currently seems set on drinking it instead.

Warily he ventures forward to look through the keyhole - around the upturned bedstead.

(He is blithely ignoring Puck's suffering nature.)

Puck shifts slightly to give him room, or to give him a wide berth.

There is... definitely movement out there.

However for now, there is no indication that the creatures know this room is inhabited, and so long as they stay quiet, hopefully that will continue.

"Still there," he says quietly.

Puck keeps to the same volume, but manages an amused snort.

"Are they? I should have thought their hungers slaked enough by now."

Havelock shrugs one-shouldered.

(The other one is still a little stiff from the battle in Ankh-Morpork a few weeks ago, and tonight has not helped in the slightest.)

"Apparently not."

His smile remains, though it looks a little tense.

"If it is no matter to you, sir, I prefer to bide here at least a time." He stretches absently. "Here I may sit in relative comfort, and perhaps come into a plan for escape in the bargain."

"That would be nice," the young man allows.

"So long as they don't remember where we went."


They are zombies. WHO KNOWS.

Puck snorts.

"They do not seem to me to be overburdened with brains."

This will not be the case for long if they have anything to say about it!


(All they want to do is eat people's brains. That's not unreasonable, I mean;- no-one's going to to eat their eyes.)

"No. But then, those that are common where I come from should not be so vicious. They are entirely reasonable."

This piques Puck's interest.

"You know the creatures?"

Havelock's expression gains a hint of frustration.

"Zombies exist where I live. But they are no more violent than ordinary men. They certainly do not crave flesh the way these do."

Or if they do, they also do a damn good job hiding it.

Puck laughs.

"Than ordinary men."

Havelock rolls his eyes.

"Yes, they still have capacity for violence. But not lacking reason."

And reason is not so much to be found outside that door.

"How do we know they do not reason?" Puck asks pleasantly.

"Craving flesh, they seek it and they get it. It seems a most efficient arrangement."

"If they had reason, they could quite easily have climbed into the rafters after us," Havelock points out. "And they would not have been so easily lured from the stairs to let us escape."

Instead they clumped together and got firebombed for their troubles.

The fairy's eyebrows arch.

"If reason need be accompanied by cleverness, a goodly number of your fellows should not qualify."

Havelock waves a dismissive hand.

"Those, I do not consider to possess enough in the way of reason to count."


...Er.

Havelock is not a good person.

Puck blinks, startled.

And laughs.


"No ... you are far too keen for that. Small wonder Hellebore sought you out."

Havelock, were he in the habit, would make a face at that.

"Chance, I think rather," he says. "He did not strike me as the type to tell much diference between mortals."

He knows the type. Just insert 'peasants', 'foreigners', 'dwarves/trolls/alternate race of your choice' here.

He smiles slightly.

"No. I think he was not."

Oberon and his court will likely believe that Puck is the one who has killed him.

Yet another cheering thought.

Well, it might make any future emissaries warier, at any rate?

Or they might attack first, and not stop to negotiate!

Still...

"Well, if further emissaries come, they will not get far at the moment," he observes dryly.

The low-level groaning outside the door rises as if to punctuate his words.

Puck sighs, head lolling back against the bed frame.

More deaths to deposit at his door. Lovely.

"The king had better come himself," he mutters, "and see I do not slay my kin. Insufferable though they may be."

Havelock is briefly tempted to ask how much worse this King's vengeance could possibly get, since Puck's death was apparently already on the cards.

Possibly this is not the concern, however.

(Just because Havelock is mostly lukewarm towards his fellow man, doesn't mean he can't understand that some people are not the same.)

"Is he likely to do so?"
